Making biodiesel at home Part 1

Hello! My name is Graydon Blair and on behalf of parliament Diesel Performance and Utah biodiesel supply wea € ™ re now going to show how to make a large batch of biodiesel. Wea € ™ re going to show how it takes place, the oil wea € ™ ll talk a little about the way our oil filter, how to transfer the oil into a biodiesel processer, how we do the process and then how the fuel is used. Wea € ™ re going to talk about various things along the way for leta € ™ s start.

First we have a shop, to go out and collect the oil in 55 gallon drums. We put these drums behind restaurants that wea € ™ ve contracted with, and put the oil in these drums, and then return to store in the back of a truck. An elevator door in the back of the truck by making it really easy to switch on and off. Many people try to collect using oil pumps, they € ™ ll go and they ll ™ € actually pump oil, and try that for a while, but an elevator door was much easier. They € ™ re almost 2,500 to $ 3,500, but the best thing in the world. If you get one be sure that you donâ t ™ € leaves your uncles, aunts, friends, and everyone knows because youâ € ™ ll soon be transporting pianos in the street. They € ™ re just a wonderful piece of equipment to have in a truck. However, what we have when we go to collect oil is wea € ™ ll bring back a barrel here, take either near here, then wea € ™ ll get a filter. And it looks good and kind of dirty. I tell you a little about what we use here. Remember that in our small environment we speak on the use of methanol, lye, and oil. Well, here is our methanol. This is a methanol tank, 325 gallons. Most of you Wona € ™ need anything of this size, but we do much fuel that gets this issue for us. Then we go through it and bring us back to our area. You can get very cheap when you get it that way. This is a 55 gallon drum. This is typically how to buy methanol. This is a common way. The most easy to transport to your home, you can put on the back of a pickup truck. And then when you get home for carriage in the back of his biodiesel processor.

These are our barrels of glycerin, and as we produced our fuel if youâ € ™ ll remember we had our product not of glycerine. Thus it is better to take the machine glycerine and wea € ™ ll come here and pour this right glycerin in these barrels. The glycerin ™ € s will contain crude glycerin, a little soap, a catalyst, and some methanol. We cover up the barrels, use our elevator door, throws herself on the back the truck, and drag it to a water treatment plant where it off our hands. They add to their methane digester that produces methane gas that is used to run their generators. We get rid of that. It donâ ™ € t charge us for it, you donâ ™ € t pay to get it taken off our hands, but itâ € ™ sa great way to get rid of it. Once we get the glycerin from here then you can take the fuel out of here and make biodiesel with it. Iâ € ™ ll show in a moment how we fuel.

Then there is the oil filter in a drum of this type, have a sump pump. And all this is a good old economic sump pump from Home Depot, Lowe € ™ s, whatever. Wea € ™ ve assembled a large tube in it and a tube, and use this to fill the machine full of oil. We just turn it on, works very well, we put these drums in trucks so that we can move them to our team, and wea ™ € re able to make biodiesel. Just now we have shown that some methanol. This is a drum of methanol here. This is just a pump that wea € ™ ve joined him so that we can quickly methanol pump on our machine. Wea € ™ re going to do a lot today so you can see how it works. The methanol, petroleum, and then if the pots beside me here, this is lots and lots of catalyst. This particular catalyst contains potassium hydroxide, and use it to produce biodiesel. Once again remember itâ € ™ s being made to about a dollar per gallon, and we can save ourselves a lot of money by using what normal people throw away. Once wea ™ € I brought our oil in our warehouse we have to filter it. To produce biodiesel itâ € ™ sa good idea to filter, so that you get all your crustys and crunchys out. This is just a 55-gallon drum sieve. Itâ € ™ sa 400 microns. Itâ € ™ s that personally used. It seems kind of gross and uky ™ € wea, but I have probably about 3,500 gallons of fuel through this filter. So they € ™ re really durable and long lasting. Itâ € ™ s just a cop-based filter. You can get in most places. Check to my site I take them too. Wea € ™ re going to put the filter, wea ™ €'re going to have our oil and the poor just through it. Now, oil from restaurants is really bad, and ugly. As you can see crustys and there are some things here and as you notice it doesn ™ € t like to go through this very fast so you get us a spatula with rounded corners, and we just move forward and backwards to let these crustys out. So This oil is only going to filter. Can you hear it filtered out there? Once itâ € ™ s ™ € filtered wea ll have it in our lab or in our shop and make biodiesel. ™ € wea So let's allow this kind of sit here for a while as we do that. One thing I want to show however, a many times youâ ™ €'re going to get really shitty thicky oil and must be disposed of crustys. As a child cut open car, which is what your you will usually get the oil, and we just leave it there. So again I'ma € ™ m just moving back and forth, very slowly. You can see some of the pieces that IA € ™ m out of it. Itâ € ™ s usually food particles and stuff from the grill, itâ € ™ s French fries, like everything they put into the oil over the restaurant that you really donâ ™ € t want in your fuel. In particularly in the truck, okay? Iâ € ™ m just going to filter that out, and our next step is to show how to load our machine, full oil. Wea € ™ So we do a lot. So wea € ™ ll see you in a second.

™ € Our next step is wea is filtered oil so now itâ € ™ s time to make biodiesel. I remember from before, to produce biodiesel requires a hot mix, so I happen to have sitting next to me a heck of a hot mixture. This is a piece of stainless steel with a heavy-equipment giant in it, and a big stove in the background. It allows me to make biodiesel very rapidly and in a fairly automated. Now, to produce biodiesel that donâ € ™ t need something like this, but we do as we like. Let me tell him how much we do. Youâ € ™ I saw the fuel behind me a minute ago. Only last year we had 6800 gallons of fuel we have used in a wide variety of diesel trucks. Anything from a 07 Duramax to 93 F350 big stap the DT466 engine with International Harvester, and wea € ™ re running biodiesel in all. We have a Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and running in the wea € ™ ve got all the gammit. We know what itâ € ™ s going to do. Wea € ™ re here in Utah and we're cold outside and in winter we are starting to mix. All of our biodiesel from oil rapeseed, canola is wonderful added cold flow properties of diesel, so when it gets down to about 50 degrees to start the mix. Before we can be very manageable. Some of our diesel engines are a bit more sensitive, some sand € ™ t. Quite whether itâ € ™ sa diesel will be responsible for biodiesel, and handle very well.
