Soap Making Fragrance Oil

Soap Making Fragrance Oil

Soap Making Fragrance Oil

Why did my first batch of homemade soap separate into layers?

I made macadamia and vanilla soap and followed the instructions carefully. The only real mistake I can think I might have made would have been over whipping it, as I was no longer able to pour it into the mould as the instructions said, I had to spoon it in- too thick? But why would that cause the macadamia oil to predominately settle on the bottom and the vanilla fragrance oil on top? It ended up consistent in texture and firmness etc but the top slice is far darker than the bottom, which is oily. Is this a common mistake in soap making? What did I do wrong? I got the ingredients as a kit and they were pre-weighed and the instructions were specific.

I couldn't really say, but this website may give you some insight into what happened. She sounds like she knows her soap.

Description

Fill a container or glass with water. The quantity you determine. You need to only leave enough room for a layer of oil. You can also put something in the water, decorative items in the glass first, and you can color the water as desired (some packets of coloring are included). Pour a layer of oil on the water. Use any vegetable oil (not scented or olive oil). The oil will float on top (so it will not mix with the water). You determine how much, it must cover the surface. ½ inch of oil in a wine glass will provide about 25 hours of burn time. Tear a piece of kitchen paper towel (cotton fibers, not artificial) of about 1.2 by 1.2 inches. Roll it tightly into a small tube and cut with scissors to about 5/8 inch. Put this tube into the middle of the floater piece (the opening is there, do not try to make it bigger or anything) Let the piece fall gently into the bowl. Through the special channels the oil will drift to the paper towel. It will thus be drenched in oil. Because you can later add as much oil as you want, the paper wont burn down or disappear. Light the candle. You will now have a flame without smoke, smell or any waves. You can extinguish at any time. When you do extinguish it, there will be no smoke. The candle will burn as long as there is oil present. A bottle of vegetable oil provides about 1,000 hours of burn time. If the oil is used up, water will come into the ridges (channels) and the candle will extinguish itself. This candle never is used up, you can re-use it as much as you want. Because the candle part is made of heat resistant material (fiberglass) it can be used forever. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF SMALL CHILDREN AND ANIMALS DO NOT BURN ANYTHING UNATTENDED .BEWARE: DO NOT USE A REGULAR CANDLE WICK, THESE WOULD BURN OUT BECAUSE CANDLEWICKS DO NOT NEED OIL TO BURN.
