Baby bath gift sets using health-friendly components take center stage

Manufacturers of baby bath gift sets are incorporating nontoxic and natural ingredients in formulations.

Facing stricter product safety standards overseas, China suppliers of baby bath gift sets are developing chemically gentle and organic releases.

Key markets such as the EU and the US have limited and banned certain substances in baby shampoo, soap and lotion. Phthalates, including DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP and DNOP, are particularly regulated as they can possibly cause kidney, liver and brain damage.

Infants are especially susceptible to the substances given the increased dosage per unit of body surface area in comparison with adults. Moreover, a newborn's metabolic, endocrine and reproductive systems are still underdeveloped.

To ensure safety, makers check the quality of materials as early as the sourcing stage. All ingredients must have a physical and chemical report indicating bacterial, heavy metal, phthalate and other toxic content. Companies even send inputs to SGS, FDA, EEC or BV for further analysis.

Several suppliers also comply with ISO 22716:2007, which indicates GMP for cosmetics. Under the standard, makers must maintain a 100,000- to 300,000-grade factory boasting air and water purification systems. Other requirements include stainless steel worktables, epoxy resin floors, air shower rooms and disinfecting UV lights. During production, semifinished and final goods should be verified for pH, bacteria and heavy metal levels.

In addition, more companies are creating organic models, some of which are hypoallergenic. Recent formulations are incorporating herb, fruit, and animal protein and fat extracts.

For instance, local honey locust trees are adopted for cleansers rather than chemical surfactants to reduce eye and skin irritations. Cornstarch, eucalyptus and mint are employed to yield gentler baby powder.

Recent infant moisturizer contains jojoba, aloe, olive, honeysuckle and kiwi essences. Skin-nourishing milk protein and honey, and fragrance-enhancing herbs and flowers are also popular additions. Soybean lecithin is utilized as an emulsifier.

China-made baby bath gift sets can consist of soap bars, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, powder and massage oil. Implements such as wipes, towels, wash mitts, scrubs, cotton swabs, combs, slippers and robes are available.

Models for newborns typically have three to five bottles of hygiene products, and one or two bathing accompaniments. Those for children 3 years old and below contain fewer soap and shampoo bottles, but more accessories.

Prices are based on the set components, materials and packaging. Low-end models are $1 to $2.50 and adopt local ingredients. Items are placed in PVC bags. Midrange kits are $2.55 to $4.50 and may use imported components and paper boxes. At $4.55 to $8, high-end versions utilize organic inputs, and the products can come in handwoven baskets.
