Is the lye used in soap healthy for your skin and hair?

I'm getting mixed information on the internet as to whether lye is healthy to use or not. I'm wanting to go green on everything, and that also pertains to my soap. I looked up soap making recipes online but most of them call for lye, even in castile soap, and I'm not sure whether I should use it or not since it is a chemical.

I realize pure lye is bad for you, so does that mean using lye-based soap is bad for you as well? And does pure castile soap -- made with olive oil instead of lye -- clean just as well?

Pure lye is bad because it will burn your skin. Lye concentrations in soaps are much lower, and it has saponified.

Lye is used to break down fats and grease.

Castile soap has lye in it. It simply uses vegetable fat instead of animal fat.
