When my children were babies, had never suspected that chemicals toxic in baby shampoo. I thought that these companies had been around for decades and could be trusted to be safe.

Well, I I was in shock when I discovered that not only baby shampoo is unsafe, but so is the baby bath, baby lotion and baby powder. Now my mind was spinning - what in the shampoo and shower gel, MI? What about all the other personal care products for my family and I use every day? Were the long and unpronounceable words in my bottle of lotion representative of dangerous chemicals?

I found this list of names of most of the substances common and hazardous chemicals and began to compare the names to the list of ingredients on my bottle of lotion, shampoo and conditioner for me soap and cream razor, toothpaste and mouthwash. Talk about an awakening! I've been putting in my body more than 160 toxic chemicals the day only on personal care products.

The Environmental Working Group conducted a study in 2004 on a unique group of people: the newly born. Umbilical cord blood was collected from 10 babies born in August and September 2004 in hospitals in the U.S. This study revealed that 287 products chemicals in the group: pesticides, ingredients in consumer products, and wastes from burning coal, gasoline and garbage.

"Of the 287 chemicals detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests. A developing child in utero, or baby is more susceptible to damage from toxins than an adult. Their bodies are developing rapidly and its defense system is incomplete, and are not able to withstand the onslaught of these chemicals. Read the entire study here.

Another study conducted by EWG, found 16 chemicals from 4 chemical families in the bodies of 20 teenage girls older Americans. Teens Have been found to use an average of nearly 17 personal care products per day - the average adult woman uses about 12. Teenagers who use up to 17 everyday products are exposed to approximately 174 unique cosmetic ingredients. Read the study here. Adolescents also are developing rapidly, and are believed to be especially sensitive to hormone disrupting properties of these chemicals.

Then, What are these chemicals, and what harm do they actually do?

• Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene - Located in antifreeze and deodorant. PG penetrates the skin and weakens protein and cellular structure. Is strong enough to remove barnacles from boats! The EPA considers PG so toxic that workers have to wear protective clothing and dispose of PG by burying in the field. PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns against contact to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities, but there is not even a label warnings on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is higher than in most industrial applications.

• Lauryl sodium (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) - Used in garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in bath products Your baby animals of the foam. Exposed to SLS experience eye damage, depression, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, severe irritation skin, and even death. Small eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS. It can damage the skin's immune system and can become a class of potent carcinogens. Your body may retain the SLS for up to five days and maintain residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain.

• DEA (diethanolamine). MEA (Monoethanolaniine) and TEA (triethanolamine) - hormone-disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing nitrates. restricted in Europe due to carcinogenic effects, however, are still used in the U.S. Americans may be exposed 10-20 times per day with shampoos, shaving creams and bubble baths. Dr. Samuel Epstein (Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois) says that repeated applications of DEA based detergents resulted in a significant increase in liver and kidney cancer. The PDA of John Bailey said: "The risk is significantly higher for children".

• Sodium hydroxide - This is the caustic soda lye is found in cleaners drainage, and is now in our toothpaste! I even found this in an all-natural shaving cream.

• Triclosan - A synthesis "antibacterial" with a chemical structure similar to Agent Orange!   It is widely used in soaps, toothpastes and deodorants, has been detected in breast milk, and a recent study found that interferes with the activity of testosterone in cells. The toxic effect is measured in parts per billion: That is just a drop in 300 Olympic sized swimming pools!

• DMDM and Urea (Imidazolidinyl) - Two of many preservatives that often release formaldehyde, and are in the baby bath soap, nail polish, eyelash adhesive and hair dyes. They have a long list of adverse health effects, including system toxicity immune, respiratory tract irritation and cancer in humans and can cause joint pain, skin reactions, allergies, depression, pain headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep.

• Of polyethylene glycol (PEG) - carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that reduces the skin's natural moisture. Increases the appearance of aging and leaves you vulnerable to bacteria. It is also used in spray-on oven cleaners and cleansers to dissolve oil and grease.

• Parabens - (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, isobutyl-) - Parabens appear in a wide variety of toiletries.   One study found that butylparaben the formation of damaged sperm in the testes of mice, and a relative, methylparaben sodium, is prohibited in cosmetics in the EU   Parabens break down in the body in p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which has estrogenic activity in the breast-cancer cell cultures.

• Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40) - From an oil is in shellac and antifreeze as well as personal care products. A dry, irritating solvent that removes moisture from the skin and immune barrier, making it vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. Promotes spots and premature aging. Fatal ingested dose is one ounce or less.

• Mineral oil - a by-product that coats the skin like plastic wrap, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Decreases the function and development of skin cells, giving result in premature aging. Baby oil is 100% mineral oil!

• FD & C Color Pigments - Synthetic colors from coal tar are known human carcinogens and used as ingredients in anti-dandruff shampoos and anti-itch creams. coal tar-based dyes such as FD & C Blue 1, used in toothpastes, and FD & C Green 3, used in the mouthwash,

• Fragrances - The catchall term "fragrance" may mask phthalates, which act as endocrine disruptors and can cause obesity and reproductive and developmental damage. May contain up to four thousand ingredients (including animal urine), many toxic or carcinogenic. Cause headaches, dizziness, allergic reactions, discoloration skin, violent coughing, vomiting and skin irritation. Fragrances also affect the nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope and other behavioral changes.

Thus, in our baby shampoo and bubble bath, that our babies and young children are soaking, while they play, are fragrance, FD & C colors, parabens, sodium hydroxide, imidazolidinyl urea, among others. As noted above, some of these cause problems with the reproductive organs, and our children are sitting on this for 10-15 minutes, playing during bath time!

This is not an exhaustive list. Would have stopped reading long ago, is too overwhelming. I hope this report that the Spurs to make their own investigations and, as I did a complete cleaning of the bathroom cabinet.
