Melt And Pour Soap Base

What is the best base for homemade soap?

I am looking to make my own soaps for wedding favors. I want to do colored soap and I will be pouring it into shaped molds (flip-flops for a luau theme!). Is there a certain type of soap base that is better for melting and pouring that is also good for coloring? I was thinking of doing something with shea butter...but I don't know if that will work or not. Any suggestions?

Normally you melt the base, mix in the color and fragrance, then pour into the mold. There really isn't a "better" base, there are just bases that give an effect you like.
