How To Make Scented Candles

Materials:

* 1 box of wax (quart) (milk, fabric softener, or orange juice)
* 1 pound of paraffin wax
* 4 or 5 color pencils age
* Two ice cube trays
* A double boiler (or an empty coffee can and a saucepan)
* 1 piece of ordinary white package string about six inches long.

Caution: Do not heat paraffin directly over the burner. Paraffin is easily combustible. Use a double boiler or two pounds of coffee can be set in a pan of water. I put the coffee can on top of the canning jar ring origin (of the rings, not flat tops). If the can is not set on top of something, the concave bottom creates a vacuum when the water begins to warm, more if in the bottom of the pan, it's just that much closer to the burner.

Cut the top of the box to make it what remains is about six inches high.

Cut the string so that is six inches long. (To make a wick that lasts longer, try braiding three pieces of string together.)

Melt paraffin wax over medium heat in a double boiler or a coffee can in a container with water. Using three-quarters of a pound of some small candle or use all four squares for a larger candle. Once the water starts to boil, it will take 10 to 15 minutes for the paraffin melts.

Pencils break into small pieces and add to the paraffin. Adding the pencils color before it melts the wax, the color makes it hard to see if it has all of the liquid paraffin.

Use a pair of tongs (a scissors works, too), and immersion in the paraffin chain. Immersion in the chain will ensure that is coated with paraffin since the ice cubes may prevent some sections of contact with the liquid wax. Hold the rope so that it is in the center of the box and fill the box with ice cubes. Pour the hot paraffin over the cubes of ice.

The candle is set in 30 minutes. Let the candle for an hour or two until most of the ice cubes melt. Pour water. Remove box. Place the candle in a tray or plate to catch the remaining water from the ice cubes, and the end of fusion. Let the candle dry for a day or two.

Candles I've done with a single piece of string to record only an hour or so and burn quickly enough so that most of the paraffin remains intact. To use again paraffin, and pour melted candle wax in containers to make solid candles.

~ ~ Solid Candles

To make solid candles, select the several glass containers. Jars pint or half pint of preserves or jelly works well. For the wick, measure a few inches of chain that you need to reach the bottom of the container. Tie the string around a pencil. Place the pencil at the top of the container to keep the wick in place. When it melts the paraffin and crayons, Pour the liquid wax into the container (s). When the sail is set, trim the wick of an inch above the wax.

Scented candles ~ ~

To make scented candles, put three or four teaspoons of vanilla extract in the bottom of double boiler (or the coffee can) and then add the paraffin and crayons colors. When the wax is melted, pour into containers.
