The floral design is clearly a decal or decoupage which was applied under a clear finish, but that doesn't detract from the overall charm. The dish has a perforated insert so that soap doesn't sit in its own goo. I use mine for the appearance only and don't actually use the soap inside, so cannot attest to how well it holds up with constant moisture. The colors are slightly more subdued than indicated in the picture, the knob and trim being a deeper red. It arrived very quickly and in perfect condition.
