The bulk of polymer product polyethylene (PE), is mainly used in packaging films and other markets, such as milk bottles, containers and pipes. Polypropylene (PP), similar in volume to PVC, is used in markets ranging from packaging, equipment and containers for clothing and carpets. Polystyrene (PS), another large volume of plastic, mainly used for household appliances and packaging, as well as toys and recreation. The main role of manufacturing include polyester fibers, nylon, polypropylene, and acrylics, with applications including apparel, home furnishings, and other industrial and consumer use. The main raw materials for polymers are bulk petrochemicals.

Chemicals in bulk and intermediate petrochemicals are the main facts of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas and crude oil. Its turnover is nearly 30 percent of the total of basic chemicals. Typical high-volume products are ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene, xylenes, methanol, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), styrene, butadiene, and ethylene oxide. These chemicals are the starting points for most polymers and other organic chemicals, as well as much of the category of specialty chemicals.

Other basic industries are derived and synthetic rubber, surfactants, dyes and pigments, turpentine, resins, carbon black, explosives and rubber products and contribute about 20 percent of external sales of basic chemicals. Inorganic chemicals (about 12 percent of the production of income) constitute the oldest classes of chemicals. Products include salt, chlorine, caustic soda, soda ash, acids (such as nitric phosphoric and sulfuric acid, titanium dioxide) and hydrogen peroxide. Fertilizers are the smallest category (about 6 percent) and include phosphates, ammonium, potassium and chemicals.

Life sciences (30 per cent of output in dollars of the company chemicals), including differentiated chemicals and biologicals, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, animal health products, vitamins, and chemicals for crop protection. Although much smaller in volume than the chemicals sectors, its products tend to have very high prices-more than ten dollars lb-growth rates of 1.5 to 6 times the GDP, and expenditure on research and development from 15 to 25 percent of sales. Chemicals for crop protection, about 10 percent of this category are herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.

Specialty chemicals are a category of a relatively high value, rapid growth of chemical products markets with different purposes. Growth rates are typically one to three times GDP to prices over a dollar per pound. Usually characterized by its innovative aspects. The products are sold what they can do instead of what chemicals they contain. Products include electronic chemicals, industrial gases, adhesives and sealants and coatings, industrial chemicals and institutional cleaning, and catalysts. Coatings represent about 15 percent of sales of specialty chemicals, with other products, from 10 to 13 percent.
