How To Make Beer Soap

Alcohols are organic compounds derived from hydrocarbons (organic compounds composed of carbon and hydrogen only). They are formed by replacing of hydrogen atoms in the hydrocarbons from parents with one or more hydroxyl groups. Each hydroxyl group (-OH) is formed by an oxygen atom and an atom hydrogen and is known as a functional group. Functional groups generally determine how a molecule will behave. Alcohols with a hydroxyl group include methanol, ethanol and propanol.

Alcohols are named parent hydrocarbon by replacing the suffix-ol for the final-e. For example, ethanol is converted to ethanol converts methane into methanol and propanol is converted to propane. The lower molecular weight alcohol that is determined by the number of carbon atoms, the most soluble (or can be easier to dissolve) in water. A greater number of hydroxyl groups (-OH) also increases the water solubility because they can be hydrogen bonds between alcohol molecules and water molecules. As increasing numbers of altered carbon atoms in an alcohol, hydrogen bonding and solubility in water decreases. The hydrogen bond is also a factor for determining boiling points of alcohols. Hydrogen bonds can form between hydrogen and oxygen atoms in adjacent molecules of water and alcohol. When alcohols are heated, the energy required to break these bonds determines the boiling point. The hydroxyl groups molecule of alcohol, the higher its boiling point.

Methanol (methyl alcohol) is the simplest of the alcohols. Also known as wood alcohol, which was originally produced by heating to high temperatures, hardwoods, with no air (called destructive distillation). Today, methanol is produced from natural or synthetic gas from synthesis gas. Synthesis gas is a mixture of carbon monoxide carbon, hydrogen and methane obtained when it is heated, crushed coal with superheated steam in a process called coal gasification. Methanol occupies an important place in the industry. It is used in the synthesis of organic chemicals such as formaldehyde (the basis of various polymers, compounds with repetition structural units), acetic acid, and methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE, an additive that increases the oxygen content of gasoline [the number that is used to measure the antiknock properties of a liquid fuel]). Methanol is also used as antifreeze in the windshield washer fluid. It can be used directly as fuel to replace gasoline, but it evaporates quickly and its use requires major engine modifications the car. This alcohol is extremely toxic and can cause poisoning and blindness if swallowed.

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is best known as the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages. It is produced by fermentation (or chemical changes) sugars and starches in fruits and some plants, using techniques developed thousands of years. In fact, ancient Egyptian papyrus scrolls exist with instructions for making beer from dates and other food plants. During fermentation, glucose and other sugars from fruits, vegetables, honey, or barley grains are converted into alcohol through the action of yeast. Ethanol is also known as grain alcohol, or just like alcohol. Both of beer (usually from barley and flavored with hops) and wine (from grapes and other fruits) are products of fermentation. The Ethanol is one of the least toxic alcohols, but if enough is ingested in its pure form, poisoning and even death can occur.

Ethanol is also very important in industry. It is used in the synthesis of many organic chemicals and as a solvent in the preparation of essences, dyes, varnishes, and food extracts such as vanilla. Moreover, used as an ingredient in perfumes, dyes, and as a skin antiseptic. Ethanol is produced for industrial use chemically adding water to ethylene, a process called high-pressure hydration. Gasohol, a mixture of gasoline and up to 10 percent ethanol, has gained some acceptance as fuel for automobiles. Adding ethanol to gasoline increases the oxygen content of fuel, thereby reducing carbon monoxide emissions from automobiles. It also raises the octane level of gasoline, making it softer fuel efficiency. Gasohol is produced mainly from corn, which is fermented, and fermentation products are then distilled to produce pure ethanol.

Propanol can exist in two forms, 1-propanol (n-propanol) and 2 - (propanol isopropyl alcohol), because the OH group can connect to either the final or in the middle of the chain of carbon atoms. The isopropyl alcohol is the main ingredient in alcohol, an effective disinfectant. It also widely used in industry as a solvent for paints and chemical processes. Ethylene glycol with two hydroxyl groups, is very soluble in water and has a relatively high boiling point. Both properties make it ideal for use as antifreeze in cars. Glycerol (or glycerin) is a toxic, clear syrup from fat and oils. With three hydroxyl groups, glycerol bonds with water and have good wetting properties. It is used as an ingredient in soaps, skin lotions, and even food. Glycerol is also used as a lubricant and in the manufacture of explosives.

The alcohol content of a substance can be increased by distillation after fermentation. The distillation is done by heating the liquid until it evaporates, then collect the resulting steam, and return to a state liquid. Distillation of alcohol for medicine was established by the twelfth century in Italy, where herbs and spices are added to the distillate. It is believed that this practice led to the production of liqueurs such as Benedictine and Chartreuse. Later, other organic mixtures were fermented and distilled wine brandy, grain whiskey mashed sugar rum and vodka from potatoes.
