In the ruins of ancient Pompeii and Arabia, the messages have been found with an emphasis on the commercial and political themes.The Egyptians used a thick paper-like material called papyrus to create sales slogans and posters on the walls. This material is also used in the various forms of advertising such as requesting information on missing persons and objects, and was common in ancient Rome and Greece. However, the existence of misleading advertising, which had become known as "quack" advertisements, is becoming an increasing problem. Consequently, this led to the introduction of regulation in terms of advertising content.

With the growth Western economies during the 19th century, this gave new impetus to the growth of advertising. In the United States, for example, this led to the introduction and the success of advertising by mail order.

French newspaper La Presse, in 1836, was the first to incorporate the concept of pre-paid advertising. This form additional income allowed lower its price, resulting in increased readership and increased profits. This led to the widespread adoption by all its competitors.
