What we wanted we had known before starting

"Gee, if I had known then what I know now" is the desire of all adults to think of his youth, and most cruises over a month during the trip, before leftist thinking.

After six years and middle of the sail around the world in Dolphin Spirit on top of twenty years of sailing, five years of planning, a year of searching the right boat, and three years of actual preparation, we think we know what we should have known before casting out.

Actually, we thought that had the most areas well covered. I was a coastal marine experience, we have signed all cruise and sailing magazines, read all the books Slocum, Roth, Pardy, Hinze, Dashew and others too numerous to mention, bought every cruise guide published our licenses Ham has attended the medicine at sea, the weather forecasting, engine maintenance, and refrigeration courses, learned celestial navigation, he went to every seminar cruise and were the first names to all marine vessels, engines and related shop technician sailing within 50 miles of the marina.

Towards the end of our tour in Mexico, we were asked what they wished he had known most of them. Carole and I immediately said, in chorus, "we were going to survive." The wonderful time we had would have been even better if we had known. Statistics show that cruising is safer than driving on freeways in Los Angeles (what is not?), but that is cold comfort to cast off the lines and ports are facing a twenty-day passage across the Pacific to the Marquesas Islands or compensated for the Red Sea.

We went through the hell of supply in recent weeks before departure. Canned meat, soups, fruits and vegetables, pasta, fruit dried beans, peas, flour, rice, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath soap, detergent, shampoo, and the list goes on. We do not have enough? If we had thought of everything? Where are we going to say? How will we meet again? We have not found the jar of Gray Poupon, but have survived anyway. We ate the last of the spaghetti Costco bought in Italy, almost four years later.

All our reading indicates that the U.S. was the last place where we could to find all types of food and staples. In fact, in each place we visited had at least one shop where you can buy canned goods, flour, rice, meat, vegetables and fruits. Prices may have been higher for individual items in the U.S., but where the costs of storage, waste and waste are taken into account, the real price difference is negligible.

We wish we had known that the local people in each place we visit we are treated so well. During a visit to the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, noted that there was a travel warning advisory to visit all the places he had spent the last year, and every place that we would spend the next year to visit. We had no problems other than being arrested by the secret police in the Sudan.

We cruises were all good kids, eco, the party happy and willing to help each and every one in times of trouble. That perception, generated through inhalation SSCA bulletins across books and journals, lasted just 19 days, we arrived in Taiohae Bay. The yachts anchored and ignored us, except to ensure that no anchor too close.

To be fair, who had arrived shortly after one of those "Around the World in eighteen months" was gone. This group was completely removed by locals and other cruisers. The formation of friendships cruise actually begins only in Tahiti, when the "Class of 96" had begun to classify and stratify. Boats with the same cruising speed tend to be in the same places with it. The westward flow of boats became pieces as the groups formed and began to move together. After French Polynesia, the separation became even more pronounced, a lot is going to Samoa, another for ticks, other in Hawaii.

Crew

Believe all the horror stories you read. No matter how good a person crew is you want him / her off the boat in three weeks. The only exception we found was a boat from Australia with a captain and two crewmen young, good looking, female, both exceptional sailors.

Radio networks

You can spend all day, microphone in hand, in other SSB / Ham radio network or another, filling in VHF free time. The father of them all is the Pacific Maritime Network, which continues to vessels from Alaska to New Zealand to Mexico and the Philippines.

Each cruise group sets its own network. The hope our network was initiated by "expects", and continued by other intrepid drivers moved the previous out of range. Then there are the sub-groups such as Australians in Bora Bora. At each port there is also a local network of VHF weather, chat, advice and the sale and articles of commerce. It becomes very difficult to find a free frequency.

I neeed to know this brand of soap.... help!!! see details...?

It is french milled and is sold at nicer shops. Its a large oblong bar that is wrapped in brown paper (about the size of your hand). Around it is a wire, that has small clear stones(like crystals) on the end of the wire. Most scents are floral. Can anyone get me the name! They used to sell it at a small kitchen/bath store that fronted on Cambie near Broadway in Vancouver.. but it could have been sold anywhere! Even if you know the name of that store i would help!

Do a search on the internet. If there is a name or any kind of writting on the bar itself or even on the packaging just type it into your browser and see what comes up, cause honey i have no idea, all i know is zest...lol. Good luck!!
