help with home made soap?

i want to start making my own natural organic soap bars to use for myself an sell at the markets. im pretty hopeless as i have never tried anything like this before and i just wnted to know if anyone had any good easy recipes or websites with recipes in them that you want to share. however, i think i have an allergic reaction to normal soap because it dries out my skin, so i normally use body wash, so any soaps that dont dry out my skin would be great thanks.

Just put things like cocoa butter or shea butter in them. It is probably the alcohol or harsh chemicals in regular soap drying out your skin.

There are lots of great websites and great books for soap making, just use google or browse amazon, there are tons.

The only thing about soap that makes it not-so-easy (well, not really hard, but you have to be really careful) is the lye. It is a caustic chemical that will burn you if you're not careful.

And yes, you do need it, there is no way to make soap without fat+lye, they are both required for the saponification (turning into soap) reaction.

The only other option is to get pure soaps, like castile soap or glycerine soap, and melt them down and put in your additives to custom make them.

The Basics of Soap Making For You

Soaps are considered a great necessity in our daily lives. Since it is used for cleaning the body, people need to have soaps in their homes all the time. For most people, they just get their soaps from the grocery. Do you know that there are handmade soaps that contain natural ingredients? Soap making is an interesting activity that people engage in. In this activity, people are given the freedom to choose what to use in the soaps. Instead of using harmful chemicals, they can use natural oils and extracts to make the soap gentler on the skin. The benefit of this is that you will know what you are putting in the soaps that you use in the body.

The concept behind soap making revolves around saponification. Saponification is simply the process of making soap from fats, oils and alkali. Soaps are practically salts of fatty acids which are effective in cleaning the body. As soaps are used on the skin, the salts trap the dirt. As the soap is washed off from the body, dirt is also washed off.

Ingredients for soap making are easy to buy. These are commonly available in the local grocery. All that you need are sodium hydroxide and oil. Once these are mixed, soap begins to form. Anywhere you go, you can find these readily available so you will not have a hard time when you want to make your soaps.

There are three processes involved in making homemade soaps- cold process, hot process and the melt and pour method. The cold process of soap making is made by literally mixing exact amounts of each ingredient. The hot process involves heating of the ingredients to ensure purity of the final product. The melt and pour method is the easiest since there is already a mixed soap base that you just have to melt.

One characteristic that handmade soaps are known for is that these are gentle on the skin. You do not have to use all harsh chemicals in the soap. You also know every single ingredient that you put in your soap bars. Superfatting makes these soaps very gentle on the skin. The addition of excess fats and oils in the soap mixture makes these soaps safe for the skin.

Lye is a major component in soap making. This is a basic material which can also be harmful for the skin. It is best to wear safety gear to prevent any contact with the sodium hydroxide. Choose a well-ventilated area when making soap since fumes can be harmful when inhaled.

Start experimenting in this activity. Once you get the hang of it, you will see how enjoyable making soap from scratch is. With the many options that you can have, you will surely enjoy each kind of soap that you make. You will definitely enjoy taking a bath when you are using natural soaps made from scratch.
