Description

This is an original 1874 halftone print featuring an illustration of the tools for making wax candles. Wax candles cannot be made by molding, as is done with tallow. The wax, first well deprived by honey, is place in a boiler and gently heated; when melted, it is poured in a linen bag, moistened with hot water, and submitted to pressure. The wax passes through the pores, and is received in a vessel also wetted inside, so as to prevent adhesion of the wax. It is then re-melted in a vessel half full of water, and cast into cakes, which must possess the well-known clear yellow color. The tools represented in the illustration are the simple tools in order to make candles. Fig. A is hoop, supported by the axis B, which turns on its pivots, kept in position by piece I. The cotton wicks are hung around, while the melted wax in the kettle, Fig. 3, is poured along the wicks by means of the spoon, Fig. 2, this is done slowly, wick after wick is passed over the kettle, Fig. 3, by the rotation around the axis of the hoop, while the wax must not be too hot, as then the operation proceeds too slowly, not enough wax adhering, even then a new addition may melt off part of what was before attached to the wick. The excess of course runs back in to the vessel, Fig. 3, wherefore the pouring is done over that vessel. When cold, the candles are place in the tank Fig. 4, with water just warm enough to soften the wax slightly; when softened, they are place on the table, Fig. 5, rolled even, and then polished with Fig. 6. The lower very thick ends are then cut off alike with the knife Fig. 7, and a hole of 6 to 8 inches long made in them below, by means of the tool, Fig. 8, which is turned round in them. This whole is intended to support them on the wax candlesticks, which carry large points on them of the shape and size of Fig. 8. Please note that there is printing on the reverse.
